Grade of Walks

The Great Ocean Walk has been graded by Parks Victoria. Their system is a simple one, incorporating three descriptors:

Easy    /    Medium    /    Hard

Whilst each person’s experience of a walk is different, we have found the Parks Victoria guide to be a reliable indicator of how most people will find the walking in terms of the amount of effort required.

Basically, the grading of a particular section reflects a combination of both the distance and the amount of uphill and downhill involved. Some terrain is harder to walker than others. For example, beach sand. Some sections of the track involve beach walking, including Station Beach, Johanna Beach and Milanesia Beach, all of which are stunningly beautiful and quite unlike most other beaches you will find anywhere in the world. Maybe you will learn to love beach walking like I do: hint - try and seek out the firmer sand!

Notably, only one section of the Great Ocean Walk – between Milanesia Beach and Moonlight Head – has been graded Hard. We have included this section in our itineraries, as it traverses one of the most spectacular sections of coastline on the walk, and offers some of the most stunning views. Its difficulty reflects the undulating nature of the terrain.

We feel confident that you will embrace the challenge of walking the Great Ocean Walk. You will find your experience varies dramatically from those who tour the coastline by car, only to stopping to take in the views at the more convenient roadside viewing platforms.

Truly the best views along this coastline must be “earned” by a willingness to walk the coastal trail.
