PATROL PACK

Price: AUD299.00

Our hot new price - no one else can beat this price!

f16c17b4bdd186e547aa2902d874cafa1"The amount I save in beer fines alone makes this pack a winner!"

Our standard guiding pack this beauty never lets us down. Bombproof construction has seen ours stand up to many seasons of (ab)use both here and in New Zealand. Though only 45 litres, this alpine style pack can get you through several days of backcountry skiing and camping.

When you are on the hill at 5.30am to do control work - making it good for everybody still in bed - you want a good pack. A simple pack. One optimised for carrying those pesky high explosives and for whacking your skis on the side for a quick hike to get out of harms way. We designed the Patrol Pack for our ski field clients and by popular demand bring it - warts and all - to the retail market.

Now - this is going to sound a bit pushy - but this pack is maybe the most useful general pack Cactus make. It wasn't until it had been around for a year or two that we realised that it's size and configuration make it an excellent all round day pack. Mark Watson was perplexed to find it ideal for bouldering - the side pockets take water bottles and it is big enough for a full day at Castle Hill, camera and all.... At the same time we've had rave reports on it's utility as a full day ski touring pack and even weekend tramping. So? Well we reckon if you're an all rounder who wants one pack for everything you should buy one of these.

 Features:

  •   Cushy padded C-Lam harness and waist belt for all day comfort
  •   Front shovel pocket, for fast access to your shovel when you really need it, or in summer it's a great place for your jacket and             scroggin
  •   Ice axe loops (of course)
  •   Side pockets for shovel handles, water bottles, Internal pockets for a hydration bladder, avalanche probes
  •   Ski tail straps on the lower sides, with a side release buckle on the upper compression strap for easy ski carrying
  •   Compatible with our DB board straps for carrying your fibreglass friend
  •   Harness size is the same as a medium Deepwinter or Hector

Patrol Rucksack 2Specs:

  • Volume: 45 Litres
  • Weight: 1390 Grams
  • Measurements: 780 x 300 x 200mm

:Myself and the Treble Cone Ski Patrol have been using the Patrol pack for the past four seasons. I've found it be a very practical and hard wearing pack. Our original Cactus Patrol Packs are still going strong and it is still patrol's first choice of pack. The pack is big enough for a large control day but also packs down small when you are lucky enough to be skiing with minimal gear. The shovel sleeve works well and is very secure. The two internal sleeves are excellent for storing your probe and shovel handle whilst still allowing fast access to them when needed. Ski attachment is quick and simple meaning that you tend to use this feature more. I close my pack by stuffing the lid inside and pulling the draw string closed. Well it's quick. The shovel sleeve allows me tuck the lid straps away meaning that I never have to worry about them getting caught in the chair as I get off. Bad look. The amount I save in beer fines alone makes this pack a winner. All in all if you're thinking about a Patrol pack for work or a touring pack for play I can't see how you could go wrong by purchasing a Patrol Pack for the job.

cheers

 Deepwinter 3DEEPWINTER PACK

Price: AUD390.00

HIGH SUMMER: Price: AUD379.00

Our go to pack for snow treks and extended backcountry skiing trips the Deepwinter is tried and tested.

The Deepwinter is our alpine pack for guiding and extended climbing missions.

The primary consideration when designing the Deepwinter was to create a pack which was comfortable enough to carry 3-4 days food and gear up the valley yet be light and flexible enough to use as a summit pack and for technical climbing.

To this end the Deepwinter has the light and strong fixed length DW Harness which is supported with a polypropylene sheet. We have not included any aluminium support bars as while good for pack rigidity they can be extremely annoying when technical climbing. Our thinking is a well packed pack is rigid anyway, so take your time and tuck those socks in the voids.

The latest incarnation of the Deepwinter has a squarer form (which makes packing easier) that lies flatter to your back, simpler and stronger ski attachments and additional daisy chains. It has a new shovel flap with a built in plastic crampon patch. The shovel flap in summer is ideal for a folded sleeping mat, toastie pie iron or clothing. The Deepwinter also has fittings to take our optional DB Board Straps if you feel like strapping your snowboard to it.

Deepwinter 4 Here's what the product reviewers had to say in the winter 2004 issue of the NZAC 'the Climber':

The Deepwinter is a fairly traditional style alpine pack. It has a reasonably low profile square shape that is slightly wider at the bottom, and includes a shovel pocket with a built in plastic reinforced crampon patch. The fixed lid is generous and adjustable and has internal and external pockets. Gear attachments are simple but functional and include glove friendly ice tool clips, daisy chains, side stake pockets and big brightly coloured gear loops on the waist belt. The loop between the tops of the shoulder straps is reinforced to act as a haul loop. The pack is 1000 denier Cordura throughout with extra reinforcing on wear points like where the back joins the base.

Despite the heavy construction, the Deepwinter is the lightest pack in the overview by 300g. This is due to the fixed and extremely simple harness system. The back is flat and minimally padded and supported by an internal plastic sheet. Three different lengths are available. Three straps on each side provide the compression and attachment for skis and snow stakes. One thing missing is a compression strap over the throat of the pack, which can be handy for securing a rope under the lid.

The Deepwinter is a good example of a simple pack with just the right features for alpine use. Although perhaps not the most comfortable pack for heavy load carrying, this is more than made up for by the lightweight yet rugged construction. This was the only New Zealand made pack that we received for this overview.

Features:

  • C-1000n6 Fabric throughout, with a double layer base for durability
  • Fixed length, C-Lam DW harness for lightweight, comfortable support
  • Reinforced handle at top of harness for hauling if need be
  • New squarer shape carries better and packs easier
  • New daisy chains for clipping stuff to if you are from North America
  • Beefy plastic coated racking on hip belt
  • Now accepts our DB board straps if you want to carry your snowboard
  • Alpine Clips for your ice axe shafts, for glove-friendly tool access
  • Shovel flap for easy carrying of essential winter equipment

 Subductor 1                                                                                                                                        SUBDUCTOR                           Price: POA

"This product rocks!!"

The Subductor is a C-210 lined courier style shoulder bag. It has a squarer, more urban shape making it more suitable for A4 papers, folders, and meetings. The Subductor comes with a cross-strap which pulls it around your body avoiding that dreaded forward swing as you're passing the Brooklyn bus. A superb around town equipment vehicle and incredibly hard wearing to boot.

We do bang on about our stuff lasting a long time, but it's true. Davie Robinson's one of these is still going strong after ten years and due to the designs lack of dependence on zips and high construction values they should pretty much last forever.

Features:

  • Corner covers to protect your stuff from even the worst Wellington southerly
  • Fully lined with C-210, for the same reason!
  • Two front pockets for convenient access to your wallet/phone/keys/U lock
  • Fat 50mm shoulder strap

Specs:

  • Volume : 14 Litres
  • Measurements : Width 370mm x height 300 x depth 130mm
  • Weight : 550 Grams
  • Fabrics : C-1000n6, C-210

Care:

  • Our pack fabrics have an internal water proof coating and an external DWR coating. For increased longevity of these coatings we do not recommend machine washing
  • Brush dirt from the product while still dry
  • Hand wash in cold or warm water using mild detergent or pure soap - preferably one that's nice to the earth
  • Close zips while washing (they'll last longer), you can also lightly oil or wax zips periodically to increase their lifespan
  • Drip dry without creases

This product rocks!!
I have had my bag for a couple of years and use it every day in my work at Outward Bound as well as cruising around and
hanging out with my son.
After constant use it still looks new (and I am fussy...like really fussy!!!!)
It is the easiest bag to keep clean thatI have ever owned.
It is the perfect size ... fits a laptop, folders, my diary and a fleece ... but is not too big or difficult to carry when full.
Awesome!
Not only is it functional ... it looks great and I feel groovy when using it! Not often these days you find something great at a totally reasonable price that lasts,is practical and looks cool.
I love it and fully recommend it!

Anyone/everyone does not want but NEED a subductor bag!

I bought mine in 2005, shortly before leaving home. 13 countries, several European winters & Asian monsoon summers later later it still looks and functions like new! Beautifully constructed, ergodynamic, & very importantly, waterproof, I'd recommend this bag to everyone. Despite my best (unintentional) efforts, I've yet to leave a mark on it. You'd think it was brand new were it not for the fluff of inumerable airplanes, busses, hikes & international ferries stuck in the velcro.

Love it!

 Witness 1

A simple shoulder bag for the modern urbanite. We've been using lots of our European WK canvas lately and it's such a nice fabric we couldn't restrain ourselves from making a day to day bag out of it.

Once again the theme with this one is simplicity. The main bag has enough space for a book or two, your iPod (no doubt), and your lunch. There's an internal pocket too, with sections for your wallet, phone, and a couple of pens for when inspiration hits.

Features:

  • Perfect size for day to day use if you don't like to be burdened with too much excess stuff
  • Internal organiser pocket for those important small items that keep your life vaguely organised
  • Easily adjustable shoulder strap
  • Grippin buckle flap closure - fast, secure enough for everyday, lasts forever

Specs:

  • Sizes: Small, Medium or Large
  • Volumes: sm 7 Litres, med 12 Litres, Lrg 18 Litres

The bag I got because I needed a "man bag" to carry all the tripe that modern life requires: you know, tripe, onions, livers, spleen and kidneys. And on days when I am not going to the butchery, things like sunglasses and ipod and pen and wallet and jumper.

It absolutely rules. Its perfect. In summer I will use it even more (if that's possible) because I can use it cycle commuting as well. Currently it's a bit small for lunch, jacket, tools, gym stuff etc.

Excellent product, great price: me = happy camper.

This bag rocks, simple well made and and big enough carry what you want but not so big to make you look like a goose carrying carrying everything you own. I picked one up at a conference in NZ at the start of the year and so far have had over 20 people either try and knock it off or want to know where they can get one. Cheers Cactus swing tag

FORAY PACK                                                                                PRICE: POA

Foray 1 The start point for the Foray (or Whare) was people contacting us wanting a pack which was as simple and long lasting as their old 12oz canvas packs - they'd purchased contemporary ones only to have them destruct in less than half of the time of their previous packs. There was also a strong feeling amongst these idealists that while Chinese made packs may be what the rest of the world wants - we're from down under, we've a history of making our own things for our own ways and damn it - that's what they wanted. So, surprisingly in this day and age, we have some excellent sewing machines and people in our factory in Christchurch, we've been making packs for 12 years and we have some of the best fabrics and components in the world. We also know what it's like to walk for 10 days with only your pack for company, and we have some of the most critical friends you'll find anywhere.

Features:

  • Fixed length harnesses are stronger, cheaper and lighter, would you buy adjustable jeans? No of course you wouldn't.
  • Our C-Canvas is waterproof, super strong and half natural (it's 50/50 cotton and polyester), it's also made in Australia with first world labour and environmental concerns. While we'd prefer a 100% natural fabric it wouldn't last as long, we believe part of the 'Reduce' in 'Reduce, Reuse, Recycle' is owning one pack every 15 years not four. Lightweight is fine if you're happy to have a landfill in your back yard.
  • Big lids are good - this one will take your rain jacket and lunch.
  • Single compartments are more waterproof and stronger. Worried about getting at your sleeping bag? Narcoleptics could actually fit their sleeping bag in the lid if quick access is truly a concern, we're sure the rest of you won't mind the extra couple of minutes getting it out if it's dry.
  • No tricky flaps on the front? Actually we wanted to but everybody who saw it was against it so the popular vote decided on a basic crampon patch.
  • What else? Size - it's a true 85 litres, weighs in at 2.68 kg's, it's got good long compression straps for your snow foam and good big wand pockets for everything long and skinny.

I first used this pack on my climb up Denali, Alaska. Being a long trip in very cold conditions we had a lot of gear and had to rig a harness off the pack to tow a sled. It was great. This pack is not only the best fitting I have ever used, but despite much use still shows little sign of wear or tear. It is simple, comfortable and robust. I thoroughly recommend it. Oikkid Little Pack. No frills, solid, comfy and just big enough. I've been travelling through India and Europe for the last three years, if it
doesn't fit in this sack it doesn't get taken. Low visibility (try to get an all black one - the yellow lid label will come off if you persuade it)
and the lack of bells/whistles/pockets/shockcord has meant my mind has rested easy when I've had to check it or chuck it on top of a bus... not often because even bulging at the seams it gets allowed on as carry on. Small enough to carry everywhere but large enough to carry everything! Cactus swing tag

WK SUPERTROUSERS                                                                  PRICE: POA

WK Supertrousers 1
'I simply love these - my wife can't get me out of them!'

Our original 12oz canvas HD Dreadnought trousers have passed into urban legend as the trousers which stood up by themselves. We still make them but frankly they are a little full on for summer use so in 2004 we embarked on a new direction in super trousers, the WK's, what we think may be some of the best work pants on the planet.

Conceived to embody the original Dreadnought's toughness, but with more all-round appeal and casual style, these trousers are beautifully constructed from 12oz European poly cotton canvas for durability, pockets in just the right places, and an articulated knee for freedom of movement, our testing has shown these to be a great item whether you are lounging in the sun at the East Coast blues & roots music festival or house building through a cold winter. We've made a substantially greater size range than normal, XXS through to XXL, so that no-one needs to miss out.

When you get these you'll be a little shocked by the stiffness of the fabric. Have faith - after a few washes and a bit of wear cycles they soften to something like thick soft denim - and they'll stay that way for longer than any other pair of pants you'll ever own; truly pants that wear in, not out.

Custom Length pants are available in all colours. We try to hold stock however there may be a lead time of up to 6 weeks for some colours and sizes.

Custom leg lengths are available from -10cm shorter to +10cm longer. The leg lengths of the standard WK's fit 95% of people just fine, but for those of you who need extra length, please specify this as part of the checkout procedure. It sets you back $15 extra, which just covers the cost of hemming them.

Antelope is the darker of the two browns - kind of a nice chocolate colour.

Features:

  • Proofed European 12oz C-Canvas is great to wear and will last for ages
  • Made in New Zealand with first world environmental and labour values
  • Articulated knee for tricky manoeuvres, be they building houses or a quick spot of bouldering
  • Casual styling which won't let you down in most social situations
  • Bar-tacked at all stress points
  • YKK zips because they're the best
  • Phone pocket for easy access to your digital companion

I have had my Wk's for about 6 months and I love them!
Unlike most of the other reviews, I don't work in the outdoors, building sites, waste
work, quarry's etc... I have a soft desk job, but these puppies are still stylish enough to wear in the office (and out and about).

I have used these on a number of photo shoots, and they have served me well when kneeling in rocky puddles, heavy downpours, mud and tramping. They have even kept me dry as a bone while everyone around me has been drenched.

I simply love these - my wife can't get me out of them. We are moving to the UK in a few weeks, and I tried to convince her that I need a backup pair. She said I can only get some if I can tell her how these ones would possibly wear out... unfortunately I can't think of a way to answer that - these are invincible!

Sarah (my GF) and I both have a pair of dreadnaught wks. They are quite simply the most awesome trousers and both of us are doing our best to put them to the test. The only feature that would be handy is a second pocket on the back. Sarah was also stoked that you were able to extend the length of hers (she's 6ft 2) in such a short time.

 By popular demand!

So people have been kindly requesting us to make these almost since day one, and it's something we've always sort of resisted as we wanted the supertrouser story to be so watertight that we thought that making some out of lighter fabric, even if it is black, would somehow dilute the supertrouser brand/image we've nurtured these last few years.

However the inevitable happened one day and one of our commercial clients (big ups Franz Joseph Glacier Guides!) made us an offer we couldn't refuse and ordered up large for their staff uniform. Once we actually had some in our hands we realised that even in a lighter fabric they're still twice the pant of most out there and that we could safely appease the masses and release them into the wild.

So here you go - enjoy - and if you are one of those that we said no to when you first asked us for them, our apologies - better late than never!

HD DREADNOUGHTS                                                                    PRICE: POA

 HD Dreadnoughts 1

 '... kicking like Bruce Lee.'

Dreadnoughts are our revolutionary ski trousers. Constructed from 12oz C-Canvas they are the jeans of the ski slope. Extremely tough these babies will out last any other trousers on the slope and as we say on the swing tag 'Wear in not out' (although there is no reason why you shouldn't say wear them out to a bar or something you understand).

The whole idea was that hanging out for the season on the slopes usually leaves you financially, well - lets say, embattled. We found that the standard seam sealed waterproof breathable was fine for the first few weeks but didn't last (it's the mountains after all), they also hit the wallet hard. They certainly didn't offer what we thought was a fair dollar per hours used ratio.

We have to pay homage to Mark Schafer here, all round Telemark guru and ex Cactus employee. He made a few pairs of canvas pants and wore them around for a few years and they were obviously excellent. So we started from there (he also famously made some full body blue canvas overalls - which we haven't yet)

For 2006 the HDs have benefited from a complete redesign - they now fit better, have an extended foreleg protection, removable padding in the knee, and have two pockets. Excellent.

Features:

  • Super durable and highly wearable 12oz C-Canvas to help when you are looking down the barrel of a full season with a questionable amount of cash
  • High back waist design for good overlap/warmth
  • Pre-bent leg to keep movement free when it's all happening fast
  • Webbing cinch cuffs for locking the snow out

"Use one of these to transport wetsuits in for a rafting company. Fits 18 wetsuits, which means that it gets dragged, not carried! No holes after two years of dragging and the zips are still going strong as well. Thanks Rob and team for more great, simple, STRONG gear!"

"Big enough to live out of and that's a fact. It's size is its strength and key to its versatility. I'd find it very hard to travel without
one of these puppies, and sometimes find the need for a second BBB. With a very clean cut and style and good choice of fabric there's nothing to fault here. The full length zip allows easy access and the cross straps take pressure off the zip when the bag is full."Cactus swing tag

 WK SUPERSHORTS                                                                     PRICE: POA

 WK Supershorts 1

"They look as smart as they are tough."

Hot on the heels (but cool on the calves) of the WK Supertrousers, we present these to you. Bring us your tired, tattered stubbies and your ineffective but cheap boardies. Truly a short that can take the rigours of the building site with aplomb. Feel free to comfortably rest that 150 x 50 on your thigh as you measure it up or check it's mate for straightness.

As with the WK Supertrousers, the guts of the WK short is a 12oz super tough European poly cotton canvas. Not the cheapest material in the world (the fabric alone probably costs what the entire materials and manufacturing cost is for most shorts out there) but we're yet to find a better material - its combination of durability and breathable comfort is what makes these pants possible.

When you get these you'll be a little shocked by the stiffness of the fabric. Have faith - after a few wash and wear cycles they soften to something like thick soft denim - and they'll stay that way for longer than any other pair of shorts you'll ever own; truly shorts that wear in, not out.

Firstly, delivery to the UK took a week, and when I opened the package I was taken aback at how stiff the fabric was: six washes later they were still stiff, so I bit the bullet and wore them for a days landscaping, and they haven't been off since!

They look as smart as they are tough.Cactus swing tag
